We were thrilled to collect the Unsung Hero award at a presentation at The Royal Norfolk show this week.

The awards were jointly hosted by Norfolk County Council and the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association and seek to  showcase a wide range of our best businesses, community groups and people.

Moon Gazer  collected the award for the Unsung Hero category which was judged on the criteria of someone who has undertaken significant fundraising for a good cause and shown exceptional commitment to supporting their local community.

On collecting the awards David was able to announce that their fundraising for local cancer charity Its On the Ball had just topped £51,000 – with a target of £60,000 – but dedicated the award to the pubs who support the campaign.

It really is a team effort – we have a community of around 100 pubs across Norfolk and Suffolk who really get behind our campaign and help to raise awareness of testicular cancer and stop young men needlessly dying.

Each January our brewery and this community of pubs serve a special themed beer to get men talking about this cancer – and simply by talking about it we raise awareness and that can lead to early diagnosis – which is so important in this particularly vigorous cancer.

The judges were impressed at how we have been able to galvanize the support and how it has evolved over the years to become a calendar event – but also how David goes the extra mile with the beer push fundraising activity.

The beer push sees David push a trolley of beer with a weight of 75kg extreme distances. His first challenge saw him push 239 km in 9 days, the next year it was 7 marathons in 7 days and this October the toughest challenge yet – 7 ultra marathons in 7 days – that’s 350km.

It was great to be able to collect the award and update the total raised to date as over £51,000 – but we are still £9,000 short of our total of £60,000 – and hopefully we can get over the line during the beer push in Norwich which takes place between 1-7 October.

If we can get men checking we know that will save many lives – as early diagnosis is key to successful treatment. So, few men realise this is one of the biggest killers of young men each year.”

David is also looking for people to join in on the beer push – in a variety of ways – you can see how you can help here:
